Submission Guidelines

Clockhouse Review is a literary journal devoted to a variety of genres, publishing fiction, poetry, memoir, creative non-fiction, short dramatic work for stage or screen, and literary comics/graphic narrative. The editors welcome both traditional and experimental styles in all genres from new and emerging writers as well as established writers.


Genres

Fiction: Short stories and self-contained novel excerpts in a literary style. Genre fiction will be considered only if it sustains literary merit. (up to 5,000 words)

Poetry: All poetry in traditional and experimental styles. (one poem per submission up to 5 pages)

Memoir and Creative Non-Fiction: All memoir and creative non-fiction in traditional and experimental literary styles. No academic or scientific essays. (up to 5,000 words)

Dramatic Work for Stage or Screen: Short dramatic works in traditional and experimental styles, either a standalone piece or a selection from a one-act or full length play or screenplay. (up to 15 pages)

Literary Comics/Graphic Narrative: Black and white sequential art with a significant literary element. (up to 10 pages / note: journal printed in 6 x 9 format)

Submissions for Summer 2012 issue are closed.

All submissions MUST

• Be original, previously unpublished work written by the author

• Follow the industry-standard formatting guidelines appropriate for the genre

• Indicate within the cover letter if the work is under consideration elsewhere. We do welcome simultaneous submissions, however the editors ask that you withdraw your submission via the submission manager if the piece is accepted elsewhere

 

To submit

Please follow the bulleted list of instructions when submitting your work to Clockhouse Review. All submissions following these guidelines will be considered by the editors. Submissions which do not follow these guidelines will be discarded unread.

Clockhouse Review accepts submissions only through its submission manager. No e-mail submissions will be accepted

• All submissions must be blind. Please ensure that your name and any other identifying information does not appear within the pages of your submission

• Your cover letter is the only place where your name should appear. In this letter please introduce yourself, your background, and writing credentials. You may briefly mention the work you are submitting, but don’t spend time selling the work or convincing the editors of its merit. Let the quality of your writing do that for you

• Click the submit button to be redirected to our submission manager

Responses to submissions

Please expect to wait eight to ten weeks for a reply. After that time, if you have not yet received a reply, please check on the status of your submission by sending an e-mail to editor [at] clockhousereview [dot] com. Indicate the title of your piece, the genre, and the original date of submission.

 

Upon acceptance

By accepting any offer of publication by Clockhouse Review, the author will grant the journal first serial rights. Upon publication, rights to the work revert back to the author. As appropriate, we may also choose to nominate published work for awards or other recognition. The author retains all other rights to the work. Any subsequent publication will note that the work was first published in Clockhouse Review.

 

Payment

Payment for publication in Clockhouse Review is one contributor’s copy in which the work appears.
